Premium IOLs
At Bay Area Eye Institute, we offer the most modern
premium intraocular lenses (IOL's) as an option during
your cataract surgery.
About IOLs
Traditional IOLs are set to generally focus at one
distance -- typically either "near" or "far" -- but not
both. "Premium" IOLs, or multifocal IOLs, provide
the ability to see at various distances without the need
for correction. This full range of vision will
decrease your dependency on glasses.
Multifocal IOLs
The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens
The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is implanted in the
eye and replaces the cataractous natural crystalline
lens. The lens is normally implanted in both eyes.
The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is designed to
provide high-quality vision at all distances:
- Distance vision for driving, golfing,
sightseeing
- Intermediate vision for computer use,
cooking, talking face-to-face
- Near vision for reading, knitting
Most people receiving the TECNIS® Multifocal
Lens technology don’t need to depend on glasses for
daily activities (see chart at right):
- 90% of patients are able to function
comfortably without glasses at ALL distances2
- Nearly 9 out of 10 patients NEVER wear
glasses2
Due to advanced technology, the TECNIS®
Multifocal Lens provides excellent vision in
low-light environments, such as reading a menu in a
restaurant and driving at night.
The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is indicated for the
correction of cataracts in adult patients with or
without presybopia.

Crystalens©
Crystalens©
is a revolutionary “accommodative” IOL implant that
actually works with your natural eye muscles to allow
for accommodation, which will enable you to focus from
near to far. This will reduce and quite possibly
eliminate your need for glasses.
This unique lens implant has hinges that allow the lens
to flex as the natural focusing muscles in the eye
contract. This lens flexibility creates accommodation –
the ability to focus to and from near and distant
objects.
The advantages of Crystalens© over multifocal IOLs is
that they allow for a lower incidence of IOL induced
glare and typically provide clearer intermediate
distance vision.
FDA studies concluded that 92% of Crystalens© patients
had 20/25 or better distance vision following cataract
surgery. 73% could read comfortably without the need for
glasses.
Recently, Medicare has allowed for partial coverage of
this “specialty” IOL. This will make “out of pocket”
costs significantly lower when choosing the either the Crystalens©
or Tecnis®
as your premium IOL.
