The advanced TECNIS®
Multifocal is an implantable lens that significantly
improves vision after cataract surgery and corrects
presbyopia. Designed to help you regain younger vision
and be free of glasses, the TECNIS®
Multifocal Lens can provide you with high-quality vision
at all distances and in all lighting conditions—even in
dim light.
If you enjoy activities such as reading, boating,
quilting, playing golf, sightseeing, or surfing the
Internet, the TECNIS®
Multifocal Lens allows you to lead an active lifestyle.
Only with the TECNIS®
Multifocal IOL
- High-quality vision even in low-light
environments, such as reading a menu in a dim
restaurant or driving at night

TECNIS® Multifocal IOL Facts
Intraocular Lenses: An Overview
- Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are very small
devices—with optics usually about 6.0 mm in
diameter—that are used to replace the
natural
crystalline lens of the eye when it becomes clouded
due to a cataract. When clouding occurs, light can
no longer pass clearly through the eye to focus on
the retina.
- Approximately 15 million IOLs are implanted
worldwide each year.
- Prior to FDA approval of
presbyopia-correcting IOLs that correct for
distance, intermediate, and/or near vision, IOLs
provided correction of vision at one plane—usually
distance vision. Patients were required to wear
glasses, bifocals, or trifocals for intermediate and
near vision.
- IOLs are implanted by ophthalmic surgeons,
specially trained medical doctors who have undergone
four to five years of extensive training.
The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens
- The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is implanted in the
eye and replaces the cataractous natural crystalline
lens. The lens is normally implanted in both eyes.
- The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is designed to
provide high-quality vision at all distances:
- Distance vision for driving, golfing,
sightseeing
- Intermediate vision for computer use,
cooking, talking face-to-face
- Near vision for reading, knitting
- Most people receiving the TECNIS® Multifocal
Lens technology don’t need to depend on glasses for
daily activities (see chart at right):
- 90% of patients are able to function
comfortably without glasses at ALL distances2
- Nearly 9 out of 10 patients NEVER wear
glasses2
- Due to advanced technology, the TECNIS®
Multifocal Lens provides excellent vision in
low-light environments, such as reading a menu in a
restaurant and driving at night.
- Immediately after surgery, some people may
experience rings around lights when driving at
night, but this typically lessens or goes away over
time.
- The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is indicated for the
correction of cataracts in adult patients with or
without presybopia.

MULTIFOCAL FAQS
Q. Is the TECNIS®
Multifocal Lens procedure safe?
A. Every surgical procedure has risks and potential side
effects. Your doctor will explain all of these in full
detail. However, the lens removal and lens implant
technique used in the TECNIS®
Multifocal Lens procedure is performed over 15 million
times per year worldwide2
and is recognized for its safety and predictability.
Q. How long will it be before I see well?
A. Everyone heals at a different rate, but in most
cases, you will notice improved vision almost
immediately after your procedure. You may, however, have
an adjustment period where you see some glare or halos
around bright lights. In most cases, this goes away over
a period of weeks or months.

Q. Will I be totally free from glasses?
A. Many people with the TECNIS® Multifocal Lens
experience the best eyesight they’ve had in years. In
fact, nearly 9 out of 10 people do not require glasses
after receiving a TECNIS® Multifocal implantable lens.1

Q. Am I a candidate for the TECNIS® Multifocal
Lens?
A. If you’ve been diagnosed with cataracts, you may be a
candidate for the TECNIS® Multifocal Lens. Whether the
TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is the right choice for you
depends on your personal preferences, lifestyle, and the
overall health of your eyes. Your doctor will make a
recommendation following a complete eye exam.
Q. How is the TECNIS® Multifocal Lens different
from traditional monofocal IOLs?
A: The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is a multifocal
intraocular lens. Unlike traditional monofocal
(single-vision) lens implants, the TECNIS® Multifocal
Lens provides quality vision at all distances – near
(reading), intermediate (computer use or cooking), and
far (driving). Traditional monofocal lenses usually
provide good vision only at a distance with limited
ability to see objects that are near without glasses.
Q. How does the TECNIS® Multifocal Lens replace
the cataract?
A: The natural lens inside the eye is gently removed
through a tiny incision in the periphery of your eye’s
cornea. The cataract-impaired lens is then removed
through this incision and the lens implant is inserted
in its place to permanently replace it. The procedure
usually takes about 15 to 45 minutes and vision is
usually improved immediately.
